Lin Shirer is St. Matthews Fire Department 2007 Firefighter of the Year

At the January Awards Banquet, Engineer Lin Shirer was recognized as the 2007 SMFD Firefiighter of the Year. Lin has been with the station for fifteen years. Lin began his service in 1993, serving with the Fire Department and the Calhoun County Search and Rescue Team. Before the county had a dedicated dispatch system, Lin worked shifts at the station, taking the call, dispatching it, then taking the truck and beginning fireground operations.

The award is voted on by all members of the department. The award is based on the recipient's dedication and service to the department, fellow firefighters, and the Town of St. Matthews and Calhoun County. Lin, as a full-time Law Enforcement Officer, works a hectic schedule. He still managed to put in time at the station, take part in training, and respond to calls. Lin responded to structure fires on his way home from, or after getting home from, his job as an Investigator with the Elloree Police Department. Coming out and putting in his time at training, fires, and wrecks after a 12-hour shift in Elloree is an example to his fellow firefighters and the community of the dedication and sacrifice that it takes to be a vital part of the St. Matthews Fire Department.

Every year the department recognizes one member as Firefighter of the Year.

Congratulations to Lin Shirer, the 2007 St. Matthews Fire Department Firefighter of the Year.
