The Saint Matthews (SC) Fire Department is a group of professional firefighters serving the Town of Saint Matthews and the surrounding area. A combination department, SMFD uses volunteers to back up full-time career firefighters. Our volunteers serve as officers and are on the front lines of all of our incidents. Services provided by SMFD include fire suppression and prevention, rescue, and hazmat response. SMFD is tasked with automatic and mutual aid for five surrounding stations, providing service to over half of Calhoun County.
Saint Matthews is the county seat of Calhoun County, located in the middle of South Carolina. Calhoun County is considered one hundred percent rural, relying on agriculture as the main means of income. Split into quarters, Saint Matthews is the intersection of SC Highway 6 and US Highway 601. These two thoroughfares produce a large amount of traffic, a great deal of it being 18-wheelers hauling everything imaginable. Saint Matthews is also split in half by the CSX railway, with trains running through town on various schedules.
Meeting these risks, in addition to the risks of structure fires and other “normal” calls, is challenging, and requires a high level of training and dedication.
