Welcome

Serving St. Matthews, SC for one hundred years…and counting…

The St. Matthews Fire Department is committed to providing the finest fire and rescue services possible for the residents of the Town of St. Matthews, SC and the surrounding communities. We accomplish this by utilizing the training, professionalism and experience of both paid and volunteer firefighters, in cooperation with our mutual and automatic aid stations.

SMFD originated in 1908, when Calhoun County was established by combining parts of Orangeburg and Lexington counties.  Until the 1970’s SMFD was the only fire department in the county.  Now it is one of ten departments 16,000 year-round residents.

What is now Calhoun County EMS began at SMFD.  The original, all-volunteer Rescue Squad was based out of Station 2, until being taken over by Calhoun County in 1990.

The St. Matthews Fire Department is always looking for civic-minded individuals in the St. Matthews area to serve as volunteer firefighters or auxillary members.   If you’re interested, stop by the station to pick up an application, or download one here.
